Crozet Real Estate

Old Trail Shops
The Shops at Old Trail in Crozet

Located just twelve miles west of Charlottesville, amidst rolling green hills and Blue Ridge views is the small town of Crozet. Charlottesville Real Estate tours would not be complete without looking at the neighborhoods of Crozet. Like a lot of areas around Charlottesville, Crozet has a small town feel with excellent proximity to hospitals, schools, shopping and parks.

There are several neighborhoods like Old Trail, Grayrock, Western Ridge and Foxchase that offer the family friendly environment that many homeowners are searching for. In recent years with the addition of these neighborhoods, there has been a period of thoughtfully planned growth to the area. New and old shops and businesses mingle together gracefully and in a way that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also very functional for local residents.

Crozet Activities and Attractions

Old Trail Golf course located in Old Trail Community is an 18-hole regulation length golf course which offers a great golf experience for any skill level. Unlike many golf courses which are located in a community, Old Trail golf course is situated separately from Old trail homes providing for a more beautiful course surrounded by Blue Ridge views.
Enjoy a day of wine tasting at local vineyards including King Family Vineyard, White Hall Vineyard and Mountfair Vineyard. Outstanding wines served amidst Mountain views makes for an outstanding experience. Located on a scenic country road, the family owned and operated Chiles Peach Orchard offers a bounty of locally grown fruit from May through Thanksgiving. In the summer months peaches are, of course the highlight, fresh off the tree, in pies, and the local favorite, peach yogurt, made on site. You can enjoy a beautiful day outdoors at Mint Springs Park or Beaver Creek Reservoir. Other outings you might enjoy are the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival and the Crozet Music Festival.

Crozet Eateries

Crozet is home to a surprising number and variety of really excellent restaurants. Chances are good that no matter what cuisine you are craving you will find it in Crozet. From Thai and Chinese to Mexican and Mediterranean, as well as pizza and coffee shops you won’t go away hungry. Oh, and don’t forget that ice cream cone at the local Dairy Queen.

Crozet History

The Town of Crozet originally grew around a rail stop on a local farm. The Crozet Public Library is currently housed in the 1923 brick railroad station that was restored for that purpose in 1984. The town is named for Colonel Claudius Crozet the french born engineer who was in charge of the building of the Blue Ridge Railroad Tunnel in the mid 1800’s. The tunnel was the longest in the United States and one of the longest in the world and was at that time considered to be a great engineering marvel. The tunnel was replaced in 1944 and was renamed the Crozet Tunnel to honor Claudius Crozet. There are future plans for the tunnel to be used in a rail trail project.

Interesting Crozet Note

The highly acclaimed Mrs Murphy Mystery series by Rita Mae Brown is set in Crozet. Written with her feline partner “Sneaky Pie Brown” (who was by the way rescued by Ms. Brown), the books center around the Crozet post office and feature a cast of mystery solving characters which includes not only the postmistress (fictional of course), but the cat detective Mrs. Murphy.
